The Tesla Model III

On March 31, 2016 Tesla Motors held the unveiling event for the Tesla Model III. Tesla feels it’s very important to speed up the transition to sustainable transport and the Model III is most affordable Tesla vehicle to date. Furthermore the Model III is a culmination of the Tesla master plan; start with a low volume high price vehicle (the Roadster), then make a medium volume not as high priced vehicle (the Model S) –  this platform also extended into the Model X. Finally with the revenue from the Model S and X, Tesla developed their high volume affordably priced vehicle – the Model III.

Safety as with the other models is a high priority, during the unveiling event Elon Musk said that the Model III wouldn’t just have an average of 5 stars in safety tests, but that it would earn a 5-star rating in every category.

The base model will cost 35,000 USD (before incentives), go 0-60 miles/h (0-100 km/h) in less than 6 seconds, while other version will even go faster. The range will be at least an EPA rating of 215 miles (345 kms), however Tesla hopes to exceed all of these numbers. This is all accomplished while seating 5 adults comfortably. To help with head room and a sense of openness in the back seats, the roof is one continuous piece of glass.

All Model III’s will come with:

  • Autopilot hardware and features
  • Front and rear trucks
  • Free super charging for freedom of travel

The first deliveries of the Model III are supposed to take place before the end of 2017, by then Tesla plans to double its supercharger stations (3,607 to 7,000) and retail locations (215 to 441) worldwide. So far there have been over 400,000 reservations made, for $1,000 you can reserve a Tesla Model III today.
