Back in 2012, Lamborghini made the announcement that they would be producing a high-end SUV in addition to their sports car lineup. Now, a production date has been set and the new SUV will be available to purchase in 2018, will cost approximately $200,000, and can clock a top speed of 330 km/h. The final name has not been confirmed yet, but the concept name of the SUV is the Lamborghini Urus. Lamborghini also plans to produce a plug-in hybrid version of the Urus by 2020 and is considering producing a zero-emission version of the SUV as well.

The new Urus will have several effects on Lamborghini’s operations. Lamborghini plans to double their current production of vehicles from 3,500 to 7,000 by 2019. The output will be split in half between their supercars and the Urus. They will be expanding their worldwide dealer network from 132 to 160 to handle the increased production. Lamborghini sold a record 3,245 vehicles worldwide in 2015, a record that will likely be broken by 2019 once the production of vehicles is doubled.

Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali made statements recently about this topic and said that “we will push like hell to sell 3,500 or more of the SUVs.” At the same time, he wants to assure current Lamborghini fans that “we will not, clearly, give up on our DNA, which is to produce super sports cars.” Lamborghini made this move partly as a response to other luxury carmakers like Porsche that have entered the popular SUV market recently.

It will be interesting to see if this new super-SUV will be popular with the crowd that can afford it. It’s hard to say if consumers will consider purchasing a utility vehicle if they’re willing to spend $200,000 for a vehicle. Time will tell if competing supercar brands such as Ferarri and McLaren will follow suit and enter the SUV market with their own concept vehicles.
