Mercedes-Benz announced in March that they are planning to launch a mid-size pickup truck within the next five years. The German based company claims that the mid-size pickup market is undergoing a transformation worldwide and is emerging as a very promising area for manufacturers. Mercedes-Benz is the first premium manufacturer to respond to this market shift by developing its own truck.

The truck in development will be Mercedes-Benz’s first entry into the mid-size pickup segment. Mercedes-Benz expanded their product range similarly about 20 years ago, when they added the Mercedes M-Class to their product line. The M-Class was the first sport utility vehicle (SUV) developed by a premium manufacturer. The M-Class went on to be a success, which proved that Mercedes-Benz is a company that can implement a growth strategy effectively.

The truck will not be available in North America initially. The areas that will be used to launch the truck initially will be Latin America, South Africa, Australia, and Europe. Research done by Mercedes-Benz showed sustained growth in these four areas regarding the mid-size pickup segment.

Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, Volker Mornhinweg, says “we can perfectly serve customers looking for a vehicle that offers a high level of utility and at the same time has the comfort, safety, and design of a Mercedes-Benz passenger car. We will design our brand’s first pickup according to this recipe for success.” This quotation provides a great summary of what Mercedes-Benz hopes to accomplish.

Given Mercedes track record, it is probable that the new truck becomes a success. Hopefully, we will see the truck in North America if it does become successful in the initial markets.
